Thoughtful Thursday: Magan's V-Day Advice Responses

Hello, Brown Queens! Welcome to Thoughtful Thursday, where you matter the most! On this Valentine's day love may be troubling you, well I'm here to give you advice! No concern is too small for an answer. So please email me at thebqc@yahoo.com with "advice" in the subject line.

Lisa, Memphis, TN, writes,

"Hello. I met this guy a few weeks ago and I really like him. How can I express my feelings without seeming cheesy or desperate?"

- Hi Lisa, I know liking a guy for the first time can be exciting and fearful all at the same time but you should not worry. People come and go, so if it does not work out, do not lose hope. The best advice I can give you is for you to take your time getting to know him. The best relationships start off with friendship. You should find out his interests, his plans for the future, how he feels about an intimate relationship, ect, ect. Also, the both of you should spend time together. This is crucial to knowing a person. Sooner or later if he likes you, you will start feeling the certain vibes and chemistry. Still you should not move to fast. Once you feel comfortable enough in your relationship to express your feelings, you should start off simple. First, saving the big emotions until its mutual. Don't be overly clingy and try to hog all his time and attention. If he feels the same that will come naturally. With that being said, just take your time.

Anonymous, Memphis, TN, writes, "

I have been suffering with self esteem issues. I'm black
(Yellow tone light skinned) and I have an Afro. I'm skinny and I feel like my Afro makes me look like a young boy. I'm awkward, like really awkward. I feel like I'm so inexperienced with life; I'm 19 years old. How do I make myself feel like a woman? I would like to feel comfortable around my age group of friends. The weight of the world seems as it is on my shoulders. I often worry about jobs and money (being that I never had a "real one") and every time I try I never get any feedback from the job. It seems like people don't accept me. Idk if I even accept myself. Help me. What do I do?

-Hi there, this post really touched me and i'm going to try my best and help you. First of all, I would like to say that I, myself, have an Afro and I have been natural for two years. It was the most liberating experience of my life. Before I was cloaked in an image that everyone else copied, pasted, and perceived as acceptable and it wasn't until I cut off all my hair and started the process, that I realized  its nothing wrong with being different. God made you flaws and all.  What you consider awkward or unacceptable he considers beautiful. Self- esteem is a state of mind. If you speak positive affirmations over and over again and practice uplifting exercises, like telling yourself everyday how beautiful you are, your state of mind will change. Don't settle for just an image. The way you look from the top of your Afro to the bottom of your feet, is all perfectly in sync to your well being. Love yourself, my dear. I believe that being a woman is not about what you have done or have not done, it's not even about age. It's about how you have matured. You could let this self-esteem issue trick you into not thinking you are good enough or you can manifest it into the power you need to fuel your well being. I'm talking about learning lessons from each experience of our lives, how you treat yourself and others, that's what makes you a woman.

RELATIONS WEDNESDAY: Valentine's for Singles?

No need to sit in the house this Valentine's Day or this weekend with your bucket of ice-cream watching sappy romance movies on Netflix soaking up in all your loneliness. Valentine's Day isn't just for couples, it can be for singles too! If it's a mate you seek 9 times of 10 he's not going to gallop in on a horse into your living room and whisk you away to a romantic destination of your dreams. Get out girl! Find a party, dress up, and have an amazing time. You want chocolate and flowers? They are going a dime and dozen at almost every store imaginable. Treat yourself. These holidays may seem like a time to go into hiding but there's no need for that. Enjoy the single life and go scope that dating scene. If you don't have a Valentine you can be ours! :) Need to hear "I love you"? I got you...
  I love you
Have the best single Valentine's Day ever!!!

TRESSES TUESDAY: Hot Grammy Hair

This past weekend the stars came out to slay with their best of the best hair at the 2013 Grammy's! If you ask me, most killed it...

Usually curly and cute Elle Varner tried something new, sporting a sleek and sexy straight look! Yes for this length! Definitely one of my favorite tresses transformation from this year's Grammy's

Rihanna looked glamorous wearing long waves! Very sixties inspired! Loved it!

Wasn't a fan of J.Lo's little knot at the top but J.Lo can really do no wrong! Still beautiful!

Really liked Melanie Fiona's pin-up do!

Kelly Rowland's dress definitely stole the show but we're talking about hair so ummm Go Kelly!!

Pretty pin-up Ashanti! Almost makes up for the dress!! Again we're only discussing hair! Good job on hair Ashanti!

Yes Volume!!! Gorgeous!

Bey was safe but pretty as always!

MUSIC MONDAY: Celebrating 1 year of The BQC

Since this week is the anniversary week for The Brown Queens' Constitution it's only right that we have some celebration music for the BQC's 1st birthday! Our very first MUSIC MONDAY and BQC post period was dedicated to the incomparable Whitney Houston! It was an honor to feature such an amazing talent! Since then there have been many great MUSIC MONDAYS but today is our birthday so today's playlist is extra special! There seems to be a Bey craze going on right now with her recent Super Bowl performance and the announcement of her Mrs. Carter tour. Brown Queens love King Bey so we have Bey's "Upgrade you" on the playlist! It also symbolizes the upgrade of the BQC!  Be sure to stay a while and enjoy the rest of the tracks featured on the BQC's birthday playlist!

Happy Birthday BQC!!!

*The playlist includes Upgrade you x Bey ft. Jay-Z, Suit and Tie x x Justin Timberlake ft. Jay-Z, Those who wait x Daley, Closer x Goapele, Say Ahh(birthday) x Trey Songz*

RELATIONS WEDNESDAY: A Game of Cat and Mouse

First, let me break down this old dating game of chase called "cat and mouse" or rather how it has been in my experience. It usually goes a little something like this; cat chases mouse while mouse chases another cat who is either chasing another mouse or not acknowledging that he is being chased. If you now understand this concept then you may share my conclusion that every party involved is being quite ridiculous. In my defense and the defense of others like me, as the more than occasional chasee and chaser, when we see something worth pursuing, we pursue it. We do this regardless of the pulling and tugging of the one pursuing us. No one is turned backwards to be willingly retrieved by the one chasing them because we're too busy chasing someone else. We become selfish and ambitious that way all at once. Who's going to occupy themselves with the task of being happy? Isn't that the point? It all comes down to this; Have the person we want at the risk of their desire not being mutual or choose to be happy with the one who wants us. Now I'm not one for settling in any kind of way but I do however believe in reevaluating your desires according to your reality. All I ever wanted is for my desire for someone to be mutual. If you desire that mutual feeling as well then you may need to turn in that old game of chase for the waiting game until the right "cat" comes along.

TRESSES TUESDAY: The Year of The Naturals

It's 2013!!!! Happy New Year, Brown Queens! The BQC team and I are delighted to have you here visiting with us on this holiday! 2012 was a big year for hair. No one had a bigger year than the naturals. There is no doubt about it. 2012 was the year of the naturals. Brown Queens were going natural everywhere. As a natural, it was great to see my fellow Queens embrace and rock their natural hair. I definitely don't think this natural hair thing was a fad. As this new year unfolds I'm looking forward to seeing even more new naturals. I'll be coming up on my 3rd nappiversary in February and I couldn't be happier about my decision to go natural. I straightened my hair for the first time in 4 months on last Saturday. Can we say growth?? #PowerToTheNaturals  Here's to a New Natural Year!! For my transitioners... Good luck, keep going, and you're beautiful! For my seasoned naturals... Keep being you! Cheers!
