Tresses Tuesday: Underneath It All

I often get asked by women who wear extensions majority of the time, "How can I keep my hair healthy?" or "My hair is coming out. What can I do to make it grow?" Although I've yet to wear them I do plan on getting extensions soon. If you've been having the same questions, I have a few suggestions for you, Queens.

  1.   The first thing I usually tell friends who have damaged hair from bad weaves, relaxers, and color combined is to go natural. You'll see the difference in the texture, length, and fullness of your hair. If you're relaxed, stretch your perms out longer than 6 wks. When I was relaxed my hair seemed to grow longer when I stretched my perms out and got my ends clipped regularly.
  2. If you get sew-ins often, make sure your braids aren't pulling your scalp too tightly. This can simply pull your hair right from your scalp. It's painful and unhealthy for your hair.
  3. If you wear extensions regularly give your hair a break between weave installments so your hair can rest. You want healthy hair so you can wear your own hair when you need to.
  4. Don't let too many stylists play in your hair. My mom taught me this when I was very young. Too many different people with different regimens can't be good for the health of your hair. Find someone good who can show you their work and stick with them.
  5. Treat your own Tresses good. Just because your own hair is covered or braided up doesn't mean that it doesn't need to be cared for and maintained. You want to be able to wear your own hair and not feel you look like an untamed animal. Be good to your hair and your hair will be good to you.

MUSIC MONDAY: The Nominees For Best Male Group Ever Are...

It's been a while since my B2K crazed days but I can still remember standing 2 ft. away from my t.v. whenever a new video would come on or screaming my little heart out at a concert. Boy bands have always had a pandemonium effect on young girls. We've seen some of our favorite boy bands grow up with us and become mature men. There's nothing like a hot male group to bring the screaming little girl out of you. Here are the nominees for best male groups ever. Feel free to comment and add your own favorite guy groups to the list.

Soul Search Sunday: From Fearful To Fierce

Fear can paralyze you and hold you back from achieving your full potential if you let it do so. I think sometimes we just don't know how to take control and handle our fears. If we could use the fear and translate is as the drive or energy to do what we desire to do, fear could actually be useful. Fear can be a good thing if it's handled effectively and not handling you. Remember you're in control. Take control of your fears and you'll be fierce.

Service Saturday: Beat The Heat

It is scorching outside and there have been many casualties due to heat with most being the elderly or really young children. One thing we can all do to prevent deaths from the overwhelming heat is to make sure we stay hydrated and in cool buildings. Also, Let's check on our neighbors to be sure they have working air conditioning systems. Find fun activities to do inside or take a dive in someone's pool. We can beat the heat this summer and live to see the autumn season if we look out for one another especially the elderly and young children. Stay cool, Queens!

RELATIONS WEDNESDAY: Me, Him, And The Sideline?

There's really not much to discuss here. I can't tolerate that and never will. (Never say never?) Umm NEVER! If you've been watching the drama filled Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta series then you've seen   a real live love triangle come into play. There's just no way. If you're a MiMi, why? Leave. If you're  a Joseline, why? Stop that. Treat yourself like a Queen. Brown Queens deserve to have one King that doesn't need to go messing with peasants. My temper's rising. End of discussion.

TRESSES TUESDAY: Snip Snip

I've been growing my hair as long as I can get it and will continue doing so until my college graduation. When graduation comes I will be cutting my hair pretty short to this adorable pixie hair cut I saw on a Brown Queen in St. Louis when I was visiting. Lately I've also been seeing some hot haircuts from medium length to super short. When you're looking to do something different with your hair or your style in general a haircut is a great way to create that epic change. Please be sure that who ever is cutting your hair is highly qualified or your haircut can turn into a nightmare. Here are some of the latest in sassy trimmed tresses.

This supreme cut is a tad drastic but that magazines for you. Kerry Washington still looks fierce in her Vogue Italia photo spread with this 60's/70's inspired cut. If you haven't figured out that I'm in love with 70's chic, consider this clue #1.

Do I really need to say anything about Nicole Murphy's cut? L O V E

Gabrielle Union's long layers makes her lengthy waves look flawless. Layers seem simple but can easily look like a disaster.

Soul Search Sunday: YOLO

YOLO! That's the motto! This Drake song has taken on a life of it's on. It's become a fad with our young hip culture but the message is good nonetheless. You do only live once and you should live life like you know you'll never get another life to live. Work hard for the things you want out of life but don't forget to enjoy it. Live life to the fullest. Stop and smell the roses. Takes chances. Take risks. You only live once but don't forget you only die once too so don't be too careless. Do relax a little and manifest your destiny. Or should I say "Womanifesto" Ode to Jilly from Philly! Live royal, Brown Queens! Much Love!

Service Saturday: Your Trash Is Someone's Treasure

Brown Queens love us some retail therapy. We love shopping. And when we do, out goes the old and in comes the new. But when drawers and closets become overstuffed, we need to make more room for new items. Sometimes we give clothes to family members and friends or sell them to consignment shops or even throw our worn but nice looking items in the garbage. The nerve of us. My mom has always taught me to give my gently worn items to the Goodwill. I realize that many of us have rediscovered the thrift store and realized the value of scoring great pre-owned items for cheap. But thrift stores offer more than a steal on a vintage blazer, they provide super affordable clothing, shoes, and home items for those who truly can not afford brand new pieces or those on a much tighter budget. Your items may be old to you but they are new to someone else. Instead of throwing your gently worn clothes away, consider donating them to your local Goodwill  for someone who really could use them. It's the Queenly thing to do. :)
