FASHION FRENZY FRIDAY: FFF on The BQC

My relationship with fashion is complicated. I will tell you I love fashion like most other girls but being confident in my love for fashion is another story. I know what looks good and what doesn't but when I put things together, it doesn't always indicate that I know what I'm doing. Don't get me wrong, I never look like a bomb but I would love to be able to effortlessly put together bomb outfits every day. Also like many other girls, I want to be a fashionista and I want to have my own style  Up until a year ago, I  don't think I'd found my own sense of style. Now I think I've got it. I use polyvore.com to sharpen my fashion skills by creating sets. I study the fashion on websites and in magazines. However all the studying in the world won't help you if you don't know what you love and what looks good according to your body type. Your fashion sense is heavily dependent on you. This is my journey to being "Brown Queen Fashionista" I hope you'll join my journey whether you've got it all together or you want to polish your own skills. In the near future I will start doing OOTD (Outfit of the day) and other fashion features. I'm always open to comments and tips.  Here are some of my favorite sets I've put together via polyvore.com

TRESSES TUESDAY: TRESSES TUESDAY on The BQC

Hair, hair, and more hair!! TRESSES TUESDAY is all about hair on The BQC! It's the day of the BQC week that's strictly dedicated to the tresses of Brown Queens. Tresses Tuesday features tips on color, cuts, styles, hair-care, products, the occasional Queen talk about hair, and my own natural hair journey. We Brown Queens love our hair and here we can engage in never ending conversations about our hair. Whether you're relaxed, natural, or in transition, The BQC has it all. In other news, I've been seeing some gorgeous dread heads lately. Dreads can be beautiful. To be honest, I've contemplated growing them several times, I just can't stand that whole transitioning to dreads stage you go through to have dreads. Before I get to blabbering, here are some gorgeous pics of dreads that make me want to consider beginning to grow my own dreads.

Soul Search Sunday: Do What You Gotta Do

I've made some big moves in my personal life recently that I was quite scared out of my mind to make. I've pulled myself almost entirely out of my safety zone and for some obscure reason I believe I am making the right decisions. I'm never quick to make a decision that will have a huge impact on my life without some serious contemplating first. That I did and I was still if-y about making such drastic decisions but... I did. Now I'm out here on a limb with no safety net with no one to rely on but myself and God. And you know what? That's enough for me. I've been praying more than ever. What's also been crazy though is each time I've made a terrifying decision there's been one new song by Angie Stone that's come on the radio and given me the perfect encouragement. Since there's no better way for me to hear you than in a song, I heard her loud and clear. The message I got is, "Everything won't always be easy. Don't be afraid of a little work. Believe in yourself and take a chance." "Go on now, You can make it" is what my girl Angie Stone said. The lyrics are posted below. You'll see why I immediately felt a little wind beneath my wings. I'm out here flying ya'll. I don't know exactly how I'll land, but I have a feeling I'll land on my feet. You should try this flying thing too.

Do what you gotta do, woo. Listen.

Singing about tomorrow, I'm wishing this day would past.
My problems weighing me down, but I know they will not last.
Searching for the answers, all along they've been so near.
I took a trip down in my soul and put aside all of my fears,
I said:

Go ahead now you, can make it.
Do what you gotta do, do what you gotta do, baby.
Keep your head up, you can make it.
Do what you gotta do.
Go on now, you can make it, do what you gotta do.
Go ahead now, you can make it
Do what you gotta do, do what you gotta do

No longer will I be afraid
I had step out -n-depend on faith
I wanted to give back what HE gave to me.
So, I opened up my mind, opened up my heart,
And made a brand new start
I sang from my soul, passion kept me holding on.
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/angie_stone/do_what_u_gotta_do.html ]
Go ahead now you, can make it.
Do what you gotta do, do what you gotta do.
Keep your head up, you can make it.
Do what you gotta do.
Go on now, you can make it, do what you gotta do.
You can make it, if you do what you got to do.
Do what you gotta do.

Listen.

Holler if you hear me, yeah
Tell me can you feel me, yeah.
Holler if you're with me, yeah.
If you hear what I'm saying, say, yeah!
Holler if you're with me, and tell me if you feel me.
Holler if you're with me, if you hear what I'm saying, say, yeah!

Do what you got to do.
Keep your head up, you can make it.
Do what you gotta do.
Go on now, you can make it, do what you gotta do.
Go ahead now, you can make it
Do what you gotta do, do what you gotta do.

Don't let problems in your way.
You have got to keep the faith.
You can make, if you want.

Keep your head up, you can make it.
Do what you gotta do.
Go on now, you can make it, do what you gotta do.
Go ahead now, you can make it, if you
Do what you gotta do, do what you gotta do

SERVICE SATURDAY

Hello, Brown Queens!! Today is Service Saturday on The BQC!! I want to preserve Saturdays for highlighting community service organizations or individuals who often or even occasionally commit time to service. You know by now that a big part of this blog is about my journey to being a betterBrown Queen. I feel like a big part of that journey would be being involved in my community and doing my part to make it better. I do ask that you join this journey by going out in your local community and helping where ever possible. It's so important that we recognize the positive things going on that Brown Queens and Kings have a hand in. If you know any organizations that should get a shout out on The BQC, please feel free to comment or tell me how you help your community. Also if you know of any community projects in the Memphis area that I could get involved with, let me know! Comment, comment, comment!!

Relations Wednesday: Change In The Name Of Love

Change is good but too much changing is just... not you. If you need so much work on yourself (physically or mentally) then getting into a relationship is not the best idea. Who doesn't want to be the best version of themselves? There is nothing wrong with wanting to change for the better but who you are doing it for makes all the difference. Changing to be a better version of you is o.k. Changing to be a duplicate of someone else is not o.k. We've been hearing about the whole situation with Kobe and his wife. It's been said that his wife, Vanessa, has had plastic surgery to keep her husband interested. Their situation has just gone too far. If you want to keep him interested, work out. She was beautiful before. If he loses interest then he needs to find it again. How many cosmetic surgeries has he had? Right. As women, we do a lot to enhance our appearance i.e. make-up, weaves, the wonder bra. It is extremely important to realize why we do these things. These should only be to enhance what we already have. They should not make you nor should they break you. Deal with the real, raw, unchanged you first and love it for what it is. If you're making extreme non- health-related changes to your body for the sake of love, ask yourself "Is it really love??" By the way I love Kobe as a basketball player. This post in no way detests his skills as a pro-athlete.

Tresses Tuesday: Best and Worst Hair of Olympians

First and foremost, congratulations to the entire Team USA for bringing home so many medals in the 2012 Olympic games in London. They certainly did our country proud. Now since it is TRESSES TUESDAY, let's get down to the Olympic crowns( the hair).

There was a lot of controversy surrounding Gabby Douglass' hairstyle. So what her hair was jacked and yes someone should have provided her with a hair dresser fit for an Olympian. However the important fact is that Gabby is a Gold medal award-winning champion. Her hairstyle obviously did not affect her talent that brought victory and honor to the entire country. I think that more than makes up for the hair. Grand job, Gabby! Venus Williams and Claressa Shields are among others who should be forgiven for their hair. They have the gold. Back off.

The were some Olympian Brown Queens who remained glamorous while bringing home the gold. Sanya Richards-Ross definitely had the most beautiful, most talked about (in a good way) tresses. Her makeup was always flawless. Allyson Felix seemed to always look beautiful too. She's a natural. That girl is fast. Brown Queens rocked the Olympics if you ask me! Go Team USA!!

MUSIC MONDAY: Supreme Girls

The 2012 remake of Sparkle featuring Jordin Sparks and the great Whitney Houston is coming to theaters Friday, August 17th. The original Sparkle film captures the dream of three sisters who want to become the next big Motown superstar girl group. The Supremes were the ultimate Motown girl group and served as the model for all soul girl groups. They embodied grace and femininity as Brown Queens do so well. The Supremes style and story are both fabricated in the movie musicals Dreamgirls and Sparkle. Both of which produced some phenomenal music and are featured on their soundtracks. Today's playlist includes music form the ultimate Motown group, The Supremes, along with music from the original Sparkle and Dreamgirls.

*Today's playlist includes "Something he can feel" and "Hooked on your love" from Sparkle, "We are dreamgirls" and " And I am telling you" from Dreamgirls, and "Baby love" and "You can't hurry love" from The Supremes*

Soul Search Sunday: Find Your Own Spotlight

It can be difficult to see someone in the exact spot you wish to be in. You may even find yourself in the role of a hater! Yes, you may not realize it but hating on someone else for having what you want is being a hater and it's quite unhealthy for your self-esteem. I believe it's a sickness. When you see someone doing what you want to be doing or attempting to do something you've already done, remember this. There is enough room for everyone at the top. The bottom is where it's way too crowded.  Work hard at what you do and you'll find happiness. Don't strive to be better than someone else. Strive to be your best and the rest will come. When you find yourself being a hater, stop it and start being a supporter. People will respect you more than if you go around talking negatively about others. There can be a million people doing what you do but they won't do it like you. Don't sweat it.There's a spotlight for everyone, find your own! Only you can shine the way you do.

SERVICE SATURDAY: Back To School

Many of the young kids are returning to grade-school this month. Yes, summer vacation is officially coming to an end. Parents will stretch their paychecks thin to be sure their kids have every thing they need when they go back to school. However some families are less fortunate and can not afford the basics. This is where Brown Queens come in. Donating school supplies to a neighborhood kid or his or her school is a great way to be sure that child starts the school year the same as the other kids. The child could then focus on learning instead of what he or she doesn't have for school. Easing the financial burden for a struggling parent is a great way to give back to this community. Let's give all of our children a fair shot at succeeding this school year. After all, children are the future.

Relations Wednesday: Lovetown, U.S.A.

Where is Mr. Right and where can you find him?? Well I've been on my own quest to find mine for a while now. It always seems to be the ulterior motive when I'm going out with my girls whether they know it or not. I can't help but think that maybe my Brown King is somewhere in the crowd of a nightclub or bar. So far I've been wrong. Like I've said in previous posts, a nightclub is not the best place to pick up a worthy potential date. It sounds so desperate to say I'm going here to meet a man but the reality is you want to be in the atmosphere of your best possible candidates. So then the question raised "Where can I go to put myself in the way of cupid's arrow?" I've thought about it and come up with a few places. Don't hesitate to share your personal hotspots too.

1. Chuuuurch (Amen!)
Religious views are known to make or break the compatibility between you and a mate. To be sure you share the same views, try being open to finding a mate at church. Singles nights at church may need to be penciled in your schedule.

                                                                      2. The Gym
A lot can be assumed about a man who attends a gym regularly. #1 He's committed to and can afford his gym membership. That shows he can commit to something even if it's just a gym membership. #2 He cares about his health. 3. He's in good shape or on his way to being in shape. A nice body may be evidence to that.

3. The Grocery Store
Eggs? Check. Milk? Check. Man??  I would definitely recommend the super market in the nice neighborhood down the street from the corporate offices and far away from the grimy neighborhoods of the inner city. Think about which man shops where.
