SERVICE SATURDAY: In Honor of Jared Thomas - Donate to The American Heart Association

Today I made a donation to The American Heart Association in honor of my friend, Jared Thomas, who passed last week as a result of his heart condition. This is close to me because my younger brother was born with a small heart murmur as well. He was a dear friend to so many and he will be missed forever. I would like to help gain awareness for heart diseases in his honor by way of the American Heart Association. "We do this!"... Three words you can expect to hear from Jeremy Calhoun and Alton Cryer when it comes to serving the community. These words are backed up by action through their community outreach program, STS Enterprise, Setting The Standard. Both seniors at The University of Memphis(Go Tigers), Jeremy and Alton founded STS in November of 2012 with hopes of setting a new standard through mentoring, public speaking, and of course community outreach.
On April 27, 2013, STS hosted a volunteer event entitled "Bridging the Gap" where fellow college students came out to senior community home, Wesley Senior Ministries. From 9:30am- 12pm STS spent quality time with the seniors, serving breakfast, playing games, and engaging in good ol' conversation. Jeremy and Alton both agree; It's critical for the youth to spend time with the seniors assuring them that someone is still thinking of them and cares about their well-being. The gentlemen note that many of them have outlived their family members. The room was filled with transactions of youthful energy and graceful wisdom as STS connected with the seniors. I wasn't at Wesley Senior Ministries for very long. However, within that short period of time I was able to interact with the seniors as I joined in on a game of bowling on the Wii. Also, my perception of senior homes was changed almost immediately. Spending time with seniors as community service was never my preference and often takes the backseat to volunteering with children or mentoring youth. I quickly found out that it's a necessary service and sometimes teachers have to sit down and be taught. There's so much to learn from the seasoned individuals right in our own communities. Jeremy and Alton seek to make this a monthly event and welcome any others who wish to volunteer their time with any of their service opportunities.
On behalf of The Brown Queens' Constitution, I would like to thank STS Enterprise for inviting me and I wish your organization much success. SERVICE SATURDAY: Register To Vote

    The upcoming election is approaching fast. We all have a opportunity to have our voices heard and our votes counted. If you're old enough and able to vote, please exercise your right to vote. Only talking about what you want to happen with the country does no one any good. Vote for the best representative of your beliefs and see change happen. Do yourself a service and register to vote and get out to the polls November 6, 2012.

SERVICE SATURDAY: Take A Stand Against Abuse

       

       I have been hearing so much about abuse lately. It's been a combination of child abuse and domestic abuse against women. A child is almost rendered defenseless in most situations when they are being abused. It's a very touchy situation to question a parent about their choices of discipline. But if you know if someone is going too far, take the best approach to the situation as possible that will be most effective. Domestic abuse against women is a very common issue in our black communities and it should not be tolerated. If I could tell one victim who will actually listen, I would simply say "Leave." If you are a victim of domestic violence or abuse or know someone who is a victim, call The Hotline at 1800-799-SAFE(7233) 

The National Domestic Violence Hotline creates access by providing 24-hour support through advocacy, safety planning, resources and hope to everyone affected by domestic violence. (from thehotline.org)

SERVICE SATURDAY: How's A Whole 28 Days For Black History Sound?

    February is a big month for The BQC. It's the month in which the blog was started. As you may know, there's a constant celebration going on here on The Brown Queens' Constitution for the beautiful brown women of African decent and any and everyone is always invited. We often celebrate our Brown Kings and their accomplishments as well. Don't confuse us to be self-righteous Queens that deny our Kings their reign. We will always lift our Kings up and support them. However there's nothing wrong with having your own special time or place where the celebration is focused on the majesty of one specific group out of the entire race. That is what Black History Month gives everyone, a designated time to focus on the history of black people. Black History month does not imply that February is the only time to do so, just reminding us to take time out and focus on who we are. Our history, who we were, affects who we are and ultimately affects who we will be in the future. There is no disservice being done to us to having one month, the shortest month designated as Black History Month. The disservice is done when we ourselves are not celebrating being who we are all year round. The disservice is done when we do not seek out information about our own history. We're constantly told the same fabricated stories about the notable historic figures, accepting them, and saying we know something about our people. It would be in our best interest to ditch the role of the victim and take on the role of the victor. We've been the victim, and rightfully so in many cases, but we are also a people who have overcome a tremendous amount of obstacles and that deserves the title of "Champion." Never should we forget those monumental idols that paved the way for us but it was done so we could walk those pavements and travel further. We must now evolve and pave the way for those coming after us. We are the new leaders. It is our responsibility to learn our history, learn from our history, and to share our knowledge. That's service! So... how may I be of service to you??

SERVICE SATURDAY: Christmas For The Children

     Make this Christmas merry for a child this season. Help create the magic of Christmas by donating toys or visiting a child at your local children's hospital during the holidays. Since a lot of us are older we no longer believe in Santa Claus or the tales we were told that brought us much joy during Christmas. However, the children still have their innocence and still see Christmas as a magical time of year. Let's keep the magic of the holidays alive for the kids who still believe that if you're good, good comes to you. Happy Holidays!
